JEFF FOXWORTHY says you're a UTAHN if...

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you live in Utah.
If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in Utah.
If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed the wrong number, you live in Utah.
If 'vacation' means going anywhere south of Salt Lake City for the weekend, you live in Utah.
If you measure distance in hours, you live in Utah.
If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you live in Utah.
If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' and back again in the same day, you live in Utah.
If you install security lights on your house and garage but leave both unlocked, you live in Utah.
If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in Utah.
If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you live in Utah.
If the speed limit on the highway is 75 mph -- you're going 80, and everyone is still passing you, you live in Utah.
If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you live in Utah.
If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you live in Utah.
If you find 10 degrees 'a little chilly' you live in Utah.
If you actually understand these jokes you likely live in Utah.

Festival of Trees auction

Here in Utah, we have the annual
festival of trees, which raises money

The festival has traditionally had
decorated Christmas trees for auction
to raise funds. Over the years they
have added wreathes, table centerpieces,
gingerbread houses,a craft booth and
sweet shoppe.

Now they also have a quilt auction.
This year, my quilter, Diane, and I
donated a quilt

I forgot to get a photo of it before it
went to the auction, so I friend snapped
a photo at the auction Tuesday night.

It's a crazy 9-patch block done in
all sorts of Christmas prints with
a solid green binding. I haven't
received the final word, but friends
that were at the auction said it
went for at least $475.

I'm already looking forward to next
year...what quilt will I make?

(This quilt was part of my 12 UFO's in 2012
project...another one done! yahoo!)

Stash Busting report

Since I only post once per month,
this is my second to the last Stash Busting
report for 2012....where did the time go?

Fabric in this week: 0 yards
Fabric in this year: 0 yards

Fabric out this week: 14 yards
Fabric out this year: 107.5 yards

Yes!!!!!!!!
I made my goal of using/donating
100 or more yards this year!

Only one more month to complete
my goal of not purchasing any
fabric (or sewing/quilting patterns)
for the year....I can do it!

I'm going to add to my total of
fabric used a little more over the
month of December. Christmas PJ's
and other gifts to make for the family.

How are you doing on your stash busting?

On the Needle

I haven't posted for a couple of weeks...
time sure flies!

I finished the Organic Ruffles scarf

It was a pretty simple pattern.
The only challenge...needed longer cables.

I am now knitting a scarf using
fuzzy red/grey/brown/white yarn
I purchased when the local Ben Franklins
was going out of business 2 years ago.

It's kind of heavy, but will be a fun
addition of color on a wintery day.

And speaking of Winter...it arrived here in
my little part of Utah today.

My weekend plans...staying inside and knitting!

On the Needle-19 Oct

I started a new scarf pattern called
"Organic Scarf" by Chalice.
You can find the pattern on Ravelry.com

The Yarn is Simply Soft by Caron in grey.

As it turns out, the pattern designer
is in my local knit group, which is
doubly nice, since I needed help
with her pattern.

From this pattern, I learned how
to "make one" stitch, which increased
the scarf cast on from 240 stitches to
480 stitches.

Loving this pattern!

Free is good!

I was cleaning out a box my
sister-in-law gave me of items
from a antique store.

And in said box, I found a scrap of fabric...

So I made an apron.

And everyone can always use another apron, right!

Change is a comin'

I am ready for change...

Real change...

I have felt like I am stuck in a rut for
way to long...weeks...months...a year or more!

I need to make some drastic changes
to move towards the life I really want,
instead of the life I am existing in...

I decided to list the important things in my life:

1.Family

Spouse.

Daughter Elizabeth (with her spouse Brandon)

Son Marc

and daughter Victoria.

I also have a daughter-in-law and
5 grandchildren (with #6 on the way in 2013)

My parents

(Early photo of them with my brother)
They are no longer physically with me
here on Earth, but eternity in my heart.

2. I am a member of
Most people know us as Mormons.
My religion is very important to me.

3.My creativity:
I need create constantly.
I feel like it is almost part of my
very physical body and I need
to be able to let it out..express it...share it!

What does this list tell me?
I'm not sure right now, but I am
going to keep coming back to this
little list to help me figure out
who I am and what I want!

KCWC-Day 1

My first day of sewing as part of the
kcwc Fall 2012 sewathon.

I started sewing flannel jammie bottoms
for the grand kids for Christmas.
The blue pair are for my Grandson.

The pink and striped flannel blanket
behind the jammies is for the
newest Grandchild...she is due in 2013!

I made the blanket from a video
tutorial on YouTube. It is a
self-binding blanket. Very easy
and very quick!

Tomorrow...probably more jammies!

On the Needle

I said I wasn't going
to start any new projects
until I finished knitting the
Sinful Scarf, but...

I need something new to inspire me!

I am going to either start this crocheted cowl

 or a knit cowl,
(that I do not have a photo or
website link too)

Either way, it's not going to
be the Sinful Scarf today!

Sinful Scarf pattern from Ravelry.com

Again....

Always...

I think it's called Sinful Scarf,
because it makes me want to say
naughty, sinful words when I mess up!

Borders or no Borders?

That is the question!

My August UFO was a
crazy 9-patch Christmas Quilt.
I didn't complete my goal in August,
so I am taking the last few day of this
month to catch up.

The quilt top is finished,
but the next question is:
border or no borders?

The top right now is 90 X 100 inches.

I used many Christmas themed fabrics:
Ornaments, holly, stars, snowflakes,
pine trees and ribbons

The colors are green, red, blue, black, silver, and gold.

Ideas? Solid border? No border?
What do you think?

Finished my UFO goal

My September UFO goal was to
finish at least half of the 62 blocks

I have completed the 26-3" inch pieced blocks

and the 14-6" pieced blocked

I have all but one of the 9" inch
pieced blocks done too.

The remaining blocks are pieced
with applique...saving those for
rainy/snowy weather days.

I've really enjoyed this project!

I can't believe we are already
into Fall...it's been a really hot Summer!

For my monthly stash report, I
actually got some sewing done...yeah!
This report includes the top and back of a
quilt, the lining of a tote bag and some
Christmas gifts, (which I can't list here
because my kids might see...)

Fabric in this month: 0 yards
Fabric in year-to-date: 0 yards

Fabric used this month: 10.5 yards
Fabric used year-to-date: 86 yards

86 yards used of a 100 yard goal!

On the Needle-21 Sept

I have been concentrating on finishing
a few WIP that I found while cleaning
out my yarn boxes.

The first:

A hat and scarf set.
The scarf is the first thing I have ever knitted.
The hat is the front post crochet pattern I used
for all those August hats I did for the shelter.
The set now is sitting in the gift box.

The second:

A hooded baby blanket, made
for a baby boy coming to our
extended family this December.
It's a Lion Brand yarn crochet pattern I
found that uses one of the one pound skeins.

My current project:

I am back to knitting on the
"Sinful Scarf" pattern.
(I am much farther along in the
pattern than this old photo shows!)
I am determined to finish this thing...
then donate it so I never have
to look at it again!

Vintage UFO blocks

For my UFO September project,
I am attempting to finish the last
20 of 50 plus blocks for a Queen size top.

I started this project about a year ago
with the intention of doing a few blocks each
month, so it was finished within the year.

But...it didn't happen and another
project fell into the deep dark UFO box....

I won't have the fabric for the borders
until after the first of the year, but
I am going to still try to finish all
50 blocks this month.

Wish me luck!

Tie-die baby bag

A friend from my crochet/knit group
is expecting a son in a few weeks.

She likes the tote bags I make
and brought me some material a
few months ago to make her 2 bags.

The first was a English farm
landscape print.

The second was fabric she had tie dyed.

(Sorry for the poor photo quality)

I made the tie dye bag on the larger size
so she can fill it with all the babies needs.

I also crocheted him a little beanie cap,
plus I sewed my traditional baby gift...
...a flannel quilt.

I also have some clothes to add to
the present. I'm going to give it all
to her inside the tote....
save on wrapping paper!

On the Needle

Yahoo! A finish...finally!

I finished a shawl for my MIL
for Christmas

It is my first completely
knitted item.

The yarn in Homespun in color pumpkin.

Back to the scarf that seems to
never be finished!

UFO monthly challenge

I signed up for the
the first of year....

I completed the January UFO...

I completed the June UFO....

Beyond that....nothing...nil...nada
got finished.

This month, I am going to
COMPLETE
the September UFO...#7 on my list!

Vintage Scrap Block quilt

I will make at least half the blocks!

I WILL finish this UFO!

Stash Busting Report

I spent the entire month of
August making (crocheting/knitting)
hats for a family shelter in West Virginia.
Except for the 2 two chairs I recovered,
and hemming a couple pairs of pants,
not alot of sewing has been accomplished.

This month...I am rededicating
myself to sewing. And what an
appropiate month to do it...

National Sewing Month!

August Fabric Totals:

Fabric in YTD: 0 yards

Fabris used during August: 1 yard
Fabric donated during August: 10 yards
Fabric used YTD: 75.5 yards

75.5 yards of my 100 yard 2012 goal...
only 24.5 more yards to go!

What are your sewing plans?

Rain and Fabric!

First, the fabric...

I have gone 8 months without purchasing
any new fabric...a new record for me!

Happy National Sewing Month to you!

What projects do you have planned?

We have had a VERY long hot, dry Summer,
but the last 12 hours...

we have received alot of moisture!

I dislike the house shaking
thunder and lightening,
but I sure love the rain...

..and the rainbows!

On the Needle

I completed my goal of creating
31 hats in the 31 days of August
for a shelter in West Viriginia.

Thank goodness a fellow crocheter
posted a fast and simple pattern
on Ravelry that I could use.

Now...back to the
ongoing, never finished scarf!

What's on the needle at your House?

Chair #2...before and after

My resourceful Husband
figured out how to fix the seat,
so Chair #2 is done too.

Before...

After....

I'm happy with how this chair
turned out. It will
most likely be the new office chair!

Before and After...Chair #1

This is the chair from my teen years.
Use to sit at a desk, painted the same blue,

Before...

After...

I have a metal chair that has
also been painted black,
but I am having trouble with the seat.

Onto the next project...

Stash Report-July

I missed posting at the end of July
for my monthly stash report....

so....

Fabric in for July: 0 yards
Fabric in YTD: 0 yards

Fabric used in July: 2 yards
Fabric used YTD: 64.5

I have been finishing quilts
and other fabric projects for others,
so I can't count it towards stash busting.

Hopefully in August I will be
finishing more of my own quilts.

How are you doing?

Friday, August 10, 2012

On the Needle

I am taking a break from knitting
right now to concentrate on
crocheting hats.

I am much quicker at crocheting
then knitting, which comes in handy
with my current project:
a new hat every day of August.

The online charity Outreach to Appalachia
runs shelters in West Virginia that give out
hats during the cold weather months.

On average, the shelter goes through
approximately 100 hats per month
(mostly men's hats)

I'm a member of the group through
where we are celebrating our groups
one year anniversary.

Hence, the goal of one hat per day
for our group anniversary month!

What's on the Needle

Yes...I am still doing that
silly scarf for 4 weeks now,
so I thought I would show you
a finished crochet project.

I have been crocheting hats
for a shelter in West Virginia.

They work up fast and are really
thick and soft.

Quilt washing

Took advantage of the warm...okay, hot, weather
and washed some quilts

This is one of my favorites....
a variation of the 9-patch.

I love red!

On the Needle-Jul 20

Still that same scarf....

...tho it is closer to being finished!

What's your current project?

Friday, July 13, 2012

On the Needle

I think I will participate (sometimes)
"On the Needle" group on Fridays.

This week:

I am working on a pattern called
"Sinful Scarf".

I have been working on this scarf
on and off for a couple of months.

It's really an easy pattern,
but for some reason, I keep
messing it up and having to
rip a few rows out from time to time.

I originally started this scarf for me,
but now...I think it will end up in
the charity pile when it's finished.

If it is ever finished....

Pinterest and Auction projects

Do you use Pinterest?

I could use (waste) hours looking at (pinning)
recipes and patterns and ideas and....
well, just alot of fun things on their site.

I final decided to finish a project I pinned:

I went to the local thrift store and spent $5
for the 2 plates, bowl and 2 candlesticks.
Husband glued them up for me and
ta-da...a new veggie/fruit plate.

My Husband, Super Handyman, is a school teacher.
In the past, he has worked a second Summer job,
but this year, he decided to be a bum.
I've kept his busy...

I purchased a wooden cubby cabinet at
auction for $4. I thought my Husband could
use it for storage at home or at his school.
He decided to cut it in half and made me
2 new shoe cabinets for our closet.

I love shoes...maybe I better go shopping....

Coffee House thank you

I am a member of the
Sip and Stitch Davis County (Utah)
crochet and knit group.
We meet at The House of Brews
each and every Thursday for
some chatting and stitching.

As a thank you to the owner, Nancy,
for allowing us to take over her place,
I made this wall hanging.

(sorry for the poor photo)

I still need to quilt it, then
all the ladies are going to sign their
names on the back.

Wonderful group and
Wonderful meeting place!
(I don't drink coffee, but I love
the sandwiches, pastries and fruit smoothies)

Happy Independence Day!

Hope wherever you are,
you had a safe and happy
4th of July!

Here in Utah...we stayed
close to home and did NOT do any
fireworks.

Too many wild fires are
already burning around the State!

Charity Baby project finish

When we went away for our Anniversary
a couple of weeks ago, I realized I did
not bring any handiwork.

My husband bought me a HUGE
skein of yarn..called a pound of love!
I had crochet hooks with me,
so I followed the pattern inside the
skein label.

The pattern is Lion Brand yarns
Hooded Baby Afghan.

I have been working on it off and on for
the past couple of weeks,

Another finished item to go into the
charity/gift basket.

I love a quick finish project!

2012 UFO finish

I signed up to do the 12 UFO's in 2012
at Judy's blog, but I haven't been doing
so well this year.

I did accomlish this months goal
of 1 charity quilt (#12 on my list)

I made this quilt from scraps
for the Utah Quilts of Valor group.
It will be used for a awards presentation
ceremony sometime this month.

How are you doing on finishing
what you start?
