Last UFO finish of 2011

I finished my last UFO for my 2011 list.

This is a dresden plate quilt I found at a yard sale many years ago.
The original maker had pieced all the plates
and appliqued one of the 20 blocks.
I finished the applique by hand,
sent it to my wonderful quilter,
and finished off the binding by hand.

I finished 6 of my 12 listed UFO's this year.
I hope I do better with my 2012 list!

Early Christmas present!

My husband is a great woodworker.
He has made many of our home furniture pieces.
This year he surprised me with a early gift.

He made me a beautiful bowl.

Here is it still on the stand drying.

The woods are Walnut, Hickory, Alder and Brazilian Cherry.

I love it!

BBQ versus my VW Bug!

We have terrible winds whipping thru North Utah.

I was happily sewing, when I heard a crash.
It felt like the whole house shook.

Looked out window and saw...

My backyard fence laying in the neighbors yard!

then, I went to check for damage at the front of the house.

That is a BBQ sitting on the front of my VW Bug.
BBQ versus VW...BBQ wins!

I am going back to the sewing room.
Please let me know when the storm is over!

Birds spotted over snowy Village

Last year, I was still in morning over my Dad's passing
and did next to no Christmas decorating.
I think I put up the tree about a week before.

This year, we have a new baby in the house
and I am trying to get out of this fog I have been in lately,
so I decorated for a few hours today.

(Warning: lots of photos!)

I started by unpacking my 22 various
houses/businesses/Church/ Light Towers
I have been purchasing from Joann's Fabric
for the last 10 years.

And magically....

...they were all set up!
I have just enough electrically outlets....barely!

I also put my Grandmothers chair by the front door
ready with a basket waiting to be filled with Christmas cards.

Lastly (for this post)
I decorated the tree with various Bird ornaments.
I started collecting them last year.

But the best part of the day was....

...seeing my grand daughter M's sweet face
while looking at her first lite Christmas Tree!

Candyland Birthday party

My DIL has a combined birthday party
for both of my granddaughters each year.

Each year is a different theme
and the party-food-decoration are well done.
This year it was Candyland,

as in the child's board game.

She made cute decorations
representing the different candy's in the game.

She made treat bags with the
board game piece on the outside.

then had the kids decorate their own bag.

They kids played the game

and gathered up candy.

The table was decorated with all different kinds of candy.

My DIL's aunt decorates cakes
each year for the girls birthdays.

Unfortunately, the Candyland Castle
suffered a little in transit to the party.
Tho I'm sure no one complained when they ate it!

I told my DIL she should do this as a profession.

My son was just glad the party was over for another year.

Happy Birthday K and H,
Love Grandma Suzi!

Attitude of Gratitude-Day 1

Today, I am thankful for:

1.Having my children/grandchildren live so close by
2.Rainy day when I can stay inside
3.My physical body
(even when it is not working so well)

November UFO project

I checked over at Judy's  blogs today
and the number to finish on my UFO list
for the month of November is #3.

My number 3 is my Christmas scrappy 9-patch quilt.
I have listed that I want to get all the blocks made.

I didn't finish my October UFO.
Never even got it out to start quilting.

Maybe I'll do better with the 9-patch blocks.
We are having rain/snow off and on this whole week.
Good excuse to stay in and sew!

Gesso or Modge Podge

Fabric I know about...
But...

Gesso and
Modge Podge..I don't know!

What is the difference?

I took a couple of quilt art classes in September
and the teacher said she used Gesso.

I want to do a art journal project
where I will be applying
various magazine cutouts to a
cardboard journal cover.
The teacher says use Modge or Gesso.

I need help!

Spices and Expiration dates

I am on a cleaning binge.
I know, I know...completely unexpected of me!

My spice cabinet/baking shelves

are a disaster,

but no more!

Top shelf: Baking decorating items plus extra salt & pepper
Mid shelf: Small spice bottles plus baking items
Low shelf: Large spice bottle plus frequently used items

I made a list of what I had and what I needed
The list will be posted on the inside of the cabinet door.

Spices...expiration dates...
Do you throw out your spices at the ex date,
or do you use them a little bit longer?
I don't think expired spices would make you sick
(would they?)
They just wouldn't be at full flavor...right?

What do you do?

1st Grade crazy Hair Day!

My Grand Daughter, Miss K!

Rocky Mountain High!

We spent a couple of days in Colorado
during our mini vacation.

I have on my Life Bucket list
to visit all the USA National Parks.
We went to Rocky Mountain Park on this trip.

The Park has large herds of Elk and Deer.

We also discovered a little rabbit called a Pika

So cute!

The drive thru the Park was beautiful!

The trees were bursting with Fall colors.
After mountain drives and beautiful scenery,

we went to Colorado Springs.
My husband is a Harley Davidson man,
so we always stop at the cycle store.

We enjoyed exploring the Manitou Cliff  Dwellings.
The Indians built a community and lived here for hundreds of years,
until a 26 year water drought
forced them to leave.

Beehive oven where they baked their bread.

Colorado is so beautiful!

I can't wait to go back again...soon!
