Teaching the next generation

My daughter teaches a class for the

10 and 11 year old girls at her Church.

It's called Achievement Days.

Every other month they try to do

a charity project with the girls

where they do service for others

while learning a skill.

This month, I taught them about

basic quilt piecing.

I made quilt tops, which the girls tied.

My daughter and 3 of the girls.

2nd quilt with 4 of the girls.

I used up some of my scraps

with the Wonder Blocks pattern.

Super fast and a little addicting piecing the Wonder Blocks.

I've started another quilt using the Wonder Blocks

in Red, white, blue and yellow scraps

to donate to Quilts of Valor.

Yeah for stash busting!

Warm weather & quiltathon weekend

I think Spring has finally decided to hang around here for a while. We've gone two days without snow and there are not even rain clouds in the sky this morning. I am planning, after a couple of errands, to sew for the rest of the day as part of Judy's (patchworktimes.com) weekend quiltathon. I love these quiltathons....makes me plan my sewing out and get things finished.

I finished this quilt top this morning. The pattern is from a Sewing with Nancy TV program on how to use jellyroll and fat quarter packets. As usual, I am trying to use up my scraps, especially my solids. I'm not positive, but I think this will be my April Charity quilt...charity undecided yet.

With the warmer weather, and a Hubby who had Spring break off of school, I decided it was time to paint the porch rails. They've been the same old white color since we moved here 12 years ago, and I was ready for a change. I had grape vines woven all through the rails and over the front door entrance.... took them down to paint, then decided to give them to my neighbor who has really liked them.

Unfortunately, I don't have a complete porch painted picture (try saying that 3 times fast!), but it looks really nice. My family is so nice when I get them involved in my house plans!

Now, out to run a few errands, then back to sewing!

A finished quilt....and it goes to....

....not going to charity or to hubby.....daughter V has claimed it!

I asked Hubby (after posting here) if he would like it...nope....liked the pattern but didn't like the white & turquoise in it. I was trying to use up all the same fabric out of my stash, so it has pieced borders that are a little crazy.

Daughter asked if she could have it...sure...I'll make something else for the Hubby & for Charity. I'll probably do the same pattern for charity, just different colors.

At least I finally got to sew this week.....used some fabric!

Charity or my Husband

I've set a goal to do a large size charity quilt each month of 2009. So far, I've done the same pattern for two QOV quilts, but in different colors, for January & February. I was ready for a change for March, and began a 9-patch variation using up more solid scraps....I seriously think these solid scraps are reproducing in the box when I'm not looking!

First, I made a bunch of scrappy 9-patch blocks (squares cut 4 inches) with the center square always being black.

Next, I cut the block in half both up & down and side to side....my blocks were 11 inch, so I came out with (4) 5.5 inch blocks.

I flipped the blocks up on the upper right & lower left side and sewed together my new block

This is what I can out with...no borders yet. Right now, it measures about 50 X 50 inches.

The next decision....is this my March quilt to charity or does my patient Hubby get a new quilt after 8 years? I went to put the Log Cabin quilt (showed in the previous post) back on the bed & noticed it has some major wear & tear places. Today is Hubby's birthday, so maybe a new quilt is in order!

In Closing: March is just a day away...any special goals for you? I am working on staying up with my planned projects, as well as doing a couple of fabric experiments I have shelved for a while. Please, share your plans............

It couldn't be easier!

This is my 2nd QOV quilt...again, the Flea Market Fancy pattern, but with yellow sashing & border. I put together the backing out of scraps, like the other QOV quilt of the same pattern. The yellow fabric in this photo looks really nice, but I think it is kind of overwhelming in real life..kind of neon yellow. Hey, it was good quality fabric on sale...what can I say!

Flea Market Fancy quilt

I found this pattern, called Flea Market Fancy quilt, from Crazy Mom Quilts blog. She got it from her friend, Alissa's, blog...aren't quilting blogs great! This pattern turns out beautiful! I used solid scraps from my fabric stash, adding a black small print for the sashing and border from Joanne's fabricsMy daughter is claiming this quilt as her own! It is going to my friend, Diane, who is over the QOV for the state of Utah. I pieced the backing (no photo) out of the leftover black print and solid fabrics. Barely put a dent in my solid fabrics....probably need to do another quilt for QOV, huh!

I keep saying I am having a giveaway for my 100 post. I figured I would be there by now, but just haven't been posting much over the Holidays. But....

Come back on Sunday when I post my first Stash busting report for 2009....it's something good!
